How Much Home Insurance Do I Really Need to Cover Your Home?
How Much Home Insurance Do I Really Need?
All Service Adjusting | Miami, FL

When it comes to homeowners insurance in Miami, having some coverage isn’t enough—you need the right amount to truly protect your home and your finances. But how much insurance is enough?
Here’s how to figure it out:
1. Coverage for Your Home’s Structure (Dwelling Coverage)
You need enough to fully rebuild your home if it’s destroyed. This is not based on market value—it’s based on reconstruction cost, which includes:
- Materials
- Labor
- Permits and cleanup
💡 Tip: Ask your insurance agent for a replacement cost estimator, not just your home’s real estate value.
2. Personal Property Coverage
This protects your belongings—furniture, electronics, clothes, etc. A good rule of thumb: 50% to 70% of your dwelling coverage. You can increase this if you own high-value items like jewelry, fine art, or collectibles.
3. Liability Protection
Covers you if someone is injured on your property or if you cause damage to someone else’s. Most policies offer $100,000, but experts recommend at least $300,000 or more.
4. Additional Living Expenses (ALE)
If your home becomes uninhabitable after a covered loss, ALE pays for hotels, food, and other living costs. Make sure your policy includes adequate limits for your lifestyle.
5. Don’t Forget Flood Coverage
Standard homeowners insurance does NOT cover flood damage—a serious concern in Miami. Purchase a separate flood insurance policy through FEMA or a private provider.
